Talk About Irony... I have made a mistake on an article about mistakes. OOPS!

I hope all is well.
We have been up to our elbows in gardening and loading up our emergency food storage. We have definitely made a few mistakes along the way.

Let me share some of them with you, so you do not make the same mistakes.

Emergency Food Storage Mistakes

Here is a list of the common emergency food fails

  • Buying 100 lbs of wheat with no grinder or having only an electric grinder when the power is out.

  • Storing canned goods in the garage: Garages can get really hot in the summer time. Even though your food is in a can heat can destroy the contents quickly.

  • Not rotating your water storage: You may not think water can go bad, but it can. It can taste stale and, if not stored properly, collects bacteria that can make you and your family ill.

  • Improper storage containers: It is a good idea to repackage food that are stored in cardboard, cellophane or paper containers, like flour or macaroni. These containers are for selling purposes not for long term storage. You can extend the shelf life by many years by repackaging them into proper food storage containers.

  • Storing freeze dried or dehydrated foods in non-air tight containers: These foods will get soggy and moldy if you allow the air to get to it. Always store dehydrated and freeze dried foods in airtight containers and if you open a # 10 can repackage what is left in smaller airtight containers with oxygen absorbers for longer shelf life.

  • Waiting to plant a garden until you need the food: It take a while to get a garden going. If you wait until you need the food, you will be waiting a long time.

  • Purchasing hybrid seeds instead of NON-GMO seeds: always purchase NON-GMO seeds for your survival garden if you plan to harvest your own seeds for next year and years after. You will never have to purchase new seeds again. Hybrid seeds cannot be replanted.

  • Storing water in the wrong containers: Always store water in food safe containers made for water storage, otherwise the plastic chemicals will leach into your water supply.

  • Not having a plan on where to store your emergency food: This was one of my biggest mistakes. I went gung ho purchasing emergency food supplies without having a storage plan and my living room became my pantry. Don’t be like me….Have a plan for storage before you start collecting your emergency food.

  • Storing canned goods with no can opener: This can be a really easy fix as long as you put a can opener or two with your emergency food supply.

  • Planning to bug out with wheat and cans:Bugging out usually means you can only take what you can carry. Plan light freeze dried or dehydrated foods for your bug out bag. Backpacking recipes are the best. Don’t forget the water to cook them with.

  • Storing food but having no way to cook it: some foods can be eaten uncooked, but most of us prefer to cook our meals. Don’t forget the off the grid cooking skills you learned while camping.

  • Forgetting the matches when you are planning on fire for the mail source of fuel.

  • Don’t store what you don’t eat: This is a good idea for two reasons.

    1. If you don’t like what you have stored you will not eat it and if you don’t eat it, you won’t rotate what you have stored and you will be throwing most of your storage out because it has expired.
    2. Who wants to be in an emergency situation with a bunch of food they don’t like or are not used to… A lot of children would rather starve then eat something they do not like.

  • Know how to prepare what you have stored: Now that you have stored foods you like. Know how to prepare it. What if you planned to use a bunch of freeze dried food, yet you have no idea how to rehydrate it and use it for meals?

  • Forgetting the spices: Some food storage can be bland, don’t forget the spices to jazz it up.

  • Not storing ALL the ingredients need for your planned meals:A good way to avoid this is plan meals and group the ingredients together or attach a recipe to the main ingredients so nothing in forgotten.

  • Not rotating your food storage: Rotating food storage is very important that way you do not have a bunch of out of date food when you need it the most.

Learn from others mistakes and save a lot of time and energy and have a useable emergency food storage stash. Remember… “Eat what you store and store what you eat.” This way you will not be wasting food and throwing it away.

Good Things to Have

When you pack up your survival emergency foods, oxygen absorbers are very handy. All you have to do is put your food into good sealing moisture proof containers. This Month’s Recipe

I was flipping through a dehydrating recipe book the othe day and came upon this recipe for Spam jerky. I thought I had stored enough Spam to feed Hawaii, so being rotation minded, I thought I would try it. It turned out wonderful and it is my grandkids new favorite snack.

This recipe can be dried in the sun, in the oven or your dehydrator. This recipe can be dried at any temperature, because Spam has already been cooked during processing.

Give this Spam Jerky a try.


  • 1 can spam
  • 3 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
  • 3 Tablespoons Water
  • 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon Worceshire Sauce
  • 1/4 Teaspoon fresh Horseradish
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Liquid Smoke


  1. Remove spam from can and cut into 12 even slices

  2. Pile the slices on top of each other and make 2 more cuts to make a total of 36 slices

  3. Combine all other ingredients in a zip-loc bag and swish around until blended

  4. Add Spam slices and squish some more

  5. Marinate for at least 2 hours in the refrigerator

  6. Remove spam slices from marinade and place on drying trays

  7. Dry until chewy not crunchy

  8. Eat it up!
