The Best Food Dehydrator:
How to Choose the One for You.

You have a lot of brands to choose from when shopping for the best Food dehydrator. You have things to consider before you choose the best one for you.

Electric food dehydrators have come a long way since they first came on the market. When I was young I would watch my Mom make yummy fruit leather. Her first Model was slow, or at least for an impatient 6 year old. Now that I have been dehydrating food on my own for many years I know what to look for in a food dehydrator.

So many options...How do I choose the Best Food Dehydrator?

  • Check the customer reviews. Look for good customer service reviews as well as product satisfaction. Some of these reviews have great ideas on how to use the product as well.

  • A good product warranty is important. Don't settle for something that could fail before the first year or so, then you are stuck paying for a new one all over again. It's better to pay a little more to get a best food dehydrator. It may also be worth paying a little extra for an extended warranty if one is offered.

  • Price: If you are planning to use your dehydrator heavily buy the very best food dehydrator you can afford. It is very frustrating when your dehydrator gives out when you most need it or you have to buy a second one because the first one was too small.

  • How often will your dehydrator be used? If you are planning on using your dehydrator daily I would recommend the Excalibur. It is a work horse. I have been using mine for 9 years now and it is still going strong. If you are looking at drying your food every once in a while the Nesco products are very highly rated as well.

  • Size and number of trays: Buy the biggest food dehydrator you can afford….Especially if you are looking at a model that does not expand out. You will be much happier down the road.

  • Round dehydrators are expandable. You can add up to 30 trays on some models. The disadvantage of round dehydrators is that they have a post running through the middle so they are less “space” efficient. On some round food dehydrators you have to rearrange the trays part way through the drying process to get even drying.

  • A square or rectangle dehydrator screen is much easier to arrange the food on because you don't have to position it around the round edge. Square screens are much more space efficient for placing your items. The disadvantage to square food dehydrators is they are not expandable.
  • The walls on the dehydrator should be opaque. This will block out the light.  You want to dry your food in an area that is as dark as possible.

  • DO NOT consider an electric food dehydrator without a fan. It's important to circulate the air around to keep the food at an even temperature.

  • Dryer units with top or side mounted heaters and fans are much easier to clean. Foods drip down and if you have a unit that has the fan and heating element at the bottom, then you have all that mess to clean up around the hardware.
