Bug-Out-Bags for Kids

by Karen
(East Coast)

Bug-Out-Bags for Kids - With all the hype about bug out bags among "Preppers" and/or "Suvivalistis", I think it's really essential, as parents, to focus on what our kids need in their bug out bags!

Which ones are best for kids? Well, my husband and I have looked into that, and here's what we've found:

  1. We found a really well-stocked backpack, they're not too hard to find if you shop around. It has most of the substantive items all ready to go. The bag is a bit too large for our 9 year old, but he can carry it. We also had him pack the bag himself, so he's familiar with what's in it, what each item is for and where to find it.

  2. We found another bag that is totally cool from LifeGear. What we really like about it, is the design of the bag itself. It's great fold-out system, let's kids (or anyone for that matter!) see immediately where the most essential items are located.

The idea of groping around in a big bag for a flashlight or first aid kit is pretty frustrating. That' doesn't happen with this pack because many of the key items are handy, accessible and labeled. The pack is small enough for kids 12 and up, or so.

  3. For our youngest, who is 6, we simply put together a few essentials items and had him pack it into a small day pack. He knows where the items are and how to open the water, find the flashlight and a power bar.

Also, kids need to know what to do if they're separated from their parents. Work out a plan and a place. Be sure they know your cell phone number and give them a quarter to go with them whenever they're separated from you. Also, teach them to make a collect call at a pay phone. Many kids these days don't know how to operate a pay phone!

Well, that's what I'm passionate about -- taking care of kids and teaching them skills to survive disasters and to sustain them in the long-run.

Thanks, Karen ~ Growing-Self-Reliance.com

Good idea; get them involved as well.

You may also want to get your kids involved in selecting the items that go into their kit. I'm sure many will want to include candy, ipods, etc, but you can talk with them and help them to figure out the really important stuff.

Asking a few questions and let them think it through.
